A: 1) Temporary Disability Benefits (TTD)
2) Current Medical Treatment
3) Permanent Disability Benefits (PPD)
4) Future Medical Treatment
Sounds like alphabet soup? It's not that complicated. Let's take them one at a time.
1) Temporary Disability Benefits (TTD)
If you are injured on the job in Tennessee and the treating physician takes you off work, you are entitled to Temporary Total Benefit payments (TTD).
You are entitled to these payments starting seven (7) days after you are unable to work, until you are returned to work or have reached Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI). MMI is a fancy medical term that simply means that your medical condition has improved as much as it is going to improve.
2) Current Medical Treatment
Upon you being injured at work, your employer is required to give you a list of three (3) Drs. in which you may choose to treat you. The Dr. you choose is called your Authorized Treating Physician (ATP). The ATP is normally a general practitioner. If a Specialist such as an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon is needed the ATP should refer you to one located in your community.
3) Permanent Disability Benefits (PPD)
Once your medical treatment is complete, you are entitled to Permanent Disability Benefits (PPD) if your injury is a considered permanent. These PPD benefits normally come in the form of a Lump Sum Settlement to conclude your claim.
4) Future Medical Treatment
Even after the final settlement of your claim, you are entitled to Future Medical Treatment for the remainder of your life for the permanent injury you received as a result of your work duties. These Future Medical Benefits include surgeries, physical therapy, medications and any other treatment prescribed by your ATP or specialist.
As you can see, Tennessee Worker's Compensation laws are complicated to those not familiar with the lingo.
