The electronic message boards along the interstates tally the increasing number of fatalities in Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is alarmed at the 2012 numbers, as they are markedly higher than this time in 2011.  The collision of a car with a bicycle recently in Davidson County added to that number.  The car was traveling in a well-lit area of Old Hickory Blvd in the Lakewood Community when it rear-ended the cyclist, flipping the victim over the hood of the car and into another lane of traffic.

Alexander Grant, a 19 year old honor's student, was visiting Skidmore College when he and another underage friend attended two parties and engaged in "binge" drinking. Grant later drowned in a nearby creek and officials state the cause was asphyxia by drowning with hypothermia and intoxication being contributing factors. His parents have sued the nine men, all over the age of 21, alleging they knew Grant was underage and supplied him with liquor anyway. They are requesting $5,000,000 in compensation.

Authorities don't yet know what caused the accident that claimed the life of 3 year old Harmony Enos, but the initial investigation showed she was riding with her father on their 4 wheeler in a wooded area near their home when the accident occurred.  Harmony died from injuries sustained in the roll over.

The pilot of the small 1969 Mooney J Model plane felt his approach was too fast and tried to abort the landing to circle and attempt another landing. However, the plane was unable to gain altitude and crashed into a field at the end of the runway at the airport in Houston County Tennessee. The pilot and his two passengers were taken to Vanderbilt University and are recovering from non-life threatening injuries. Officials are investigation the cause of the crash.

The pilot and owner of the small Cessna plane was enroute from Louisiana to Florida, when ground control lost all communication with him.  Officials were alarmed when radar showed he was making circles over the Gulf of Mexico, but there was no communication coming from the plane. The Navy scrambled two fighters to intercept the Cessna, but they were unable to get a visual or prompt a response from the pilot. The jets did report the plane's windows were iced over.  After running out of fuel and landing upright in the Gulf, the plane slowly sank into the 1,800 feet deep waters, with no evidence of the pilot deploying his life raft or signaling any kind of distress call.

Passengers were asleep during the intercontinental flight aboard an Air Canada jet, when they were suddenly thrown about the cabin. Some passengers impacted the ceiling resulting in injury to themselves as well as damage to the inside of the airplane.  Officials investigating the incident say an Air Canada co-pilot awoke from an unusually long nap and mistook the planet Venus as an oncoming aircraft. He took the plane into a steep decent and the aircraft was only recovered after the other pilot realized the situation and took back control of the plane.  Officials say, in addition to pilot error, the fact that Air Canada only requires two pilots to be aboard intercontinental flights presents a fatigue problem for the crew. U.S. flights require three pilots for intercontinental flights.

Parents and caregivers of small children are having an unnecessarily difficult time installing the required child safety seats, according to a newly released study by The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Although automakers have had since 2002 (when the law requiring the safety seats was passed) to design child safety seat friendly cars, they have yet to do so. One deficiency cited is the poor placement of seat belt buckles, which block access to the anchor that holds the seat in place.

A minivan topped a hill on Oak Hill Road in Manchester, Tennessee, and just did not see the family of five riding their bicycles together that evening.  Ms. Marsee, driver of the minivan, said her vision was hindered by the evening sun in her eyes when she struck Mr. Stacey Floyd and his family while they were riding near their home. Mr. Floyd was killed and his wife and one daughter were hospitalized, two children were unhurt.

Until the pilots are debriefed and the wreckage examined, navy officials say they will not be able to pinpoint the cause of the crash of an F-18 Fighter Jet into an apartment complex.  First responders are on the scene and confirm two people have been taken to the hospital, one of those being one of the pilots.  From first reports, both pilots were able to successfully parachute from the plane before impact and survived the crash.  Local officials caution that, as the wreck site is searched, more injured people could be found.

The Lebanon Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Team is still investigating the cause of the crash that killed a Lebanon Tennessee man.  Margesheo Gilliam was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a SUV driven by Sue Carmack, both drivers are from Lebanon.  A LPD spokesperson said preliminary investigations show the SUV turned into the motorcycle's path; however, no charges have yet been filed.

Twelve passengers received medical attention upon their arrival to the airport after their United Airlines flight experienced turbulence over Lake Charles, Louisiana. None of the injuries were said to be severe, but CNN affiliate KTRK in Houston showed passengers being wheeled from the plane on stretchers.  Officials at the NTSB aren't commenting on a reason for the heavy turbulence, although a severe weather system is moving through the affected area.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is mounting an investigation into the crash involving a Springfield Tennessee Police Officer and a tractor trailer truck.  Both the officer and the driver of the truck were transported to the hospital with minor injuires. A THP spokesperson stated that both vehicles were traveling in the northbound lane of Highway 41 when the accident occured.

Witnesses say the Cessna Citation flipped over and burst into flames after its wing clipped the runway during the pilot's 2nd attempt to land at the Franklin North Carolina airport, just 75 miles east of the Tennessee state line.  None of the 5 passengers aboard survived the crash.  The plane was inbound from Florida to the small airport when the accident occurred and authorities say they will mount an investigation as to the cause.

Legislation currently being considered by the Tennessee State Legislature could have a chilling effect on a patient's right to seek relief from doctors guilty of medical malpractice. Currently, in order to obtain access to a patient's entire medical history, the court must approve a petition specific to the alleged case and the individuals involved. If this legislation passes, the doctor would have full access to the patient's medical history without being required to peitition the Court, a circumstance that Patients Rights Advocates fear could inhibit the patient's right to relief from being injured or damaged by acts defined as malpractice. Lobbyist for the medical field assert that doctor's need access to the information to form a proper defense.

While the cause of the mid-air collision is still under investigation, what is apparent is the tragic result of two Marine helicopters colliding in mid-air over the Arizona desert. The 7 soldiers were on a routine training mission aboard two helicopters when they crashed into each other killing everyone on board. Authorities don't know what caused the accident, but suspect a "brown-out" may have occured. A brown-out happens upon take off or landing when the blades of the helipter cause large amounts of dust or sand to obsure the vision of the pilots. The 7 soldiers for awaiting deployment to Afghanistan.

A lawsuit against DAL Global Services LLC and Delta Global Services filed in Davidson County Circuit Court, claims serious injury was suffered by United Airlines crewmember when a pin sheared off the tow vehicle during "pushback" at the gate.  The crewmember asserts that negligent lack of inspection by the Defendants allowed for the faulty and weakened pin to be overlooked and, when it broke, she was pitched violently about the cabin as the nose of the plane dropped suddenly.  Her attorney, Keith Williams of Keith Williams Law Group, states in the lawsuit that her injuries have and will continue to cause her great physical and mental suffering.
