Ten students and the driver of a White County, Tennessee school bus were injured after their bus crashed into a tractor trailer on April 29, 2009. The school bus was carrying 28 students on McMinnville Highway near Sunset Drive, when the bus crashed into the semi truck. The driver and eight students were transported to the hospital by ambulance. Two students were taken by their parent's personal vehicle.
The White County school bus was driven by Edward Erger, of White County. The First Express tractor trailer was being driven by Jamie Smith of Antioch, Tennessee.
According to Trooper David Hickey with Tennessee Highway Patrol, the truck was making a left turn off of Sunset Drive, onto McMinnville Highway, when the bus struck it in the right rear.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol, White County Emergency Medical Services, Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, White County Sheriff Department, Sparta Police Department all responded to the accident.
